What is The Slow Burn?
A 4-Week Saturday Intensive Workshop + 4 Months Ongoing Support
May 3–24, Saturdays at 1 PM ET / Noon CT
Virtual, with recordings + recap emails
Monthly follow-up gatherings through August
WHAT IS IT?
Don’t burn out — burn slow.
In The Slow Burn workshop, you’ll build a sustainable, nourishing writing practice — one that feels natural and rewarding, not just another obligation.
Maybe you’ve pushed yourself to follow the “perfect” writing routine: wake up at 5 AM, hit your word count, publish constantly.
Or maybe you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to start, hoping for a clear calendar, a fresh notebook, a spark of motivation.
Maybe you’ve struggled to find meaning in writing because your world — or the world — feels like it’s falling apart.
I know all of those places well. Even as a professional journalist, I’ve felt the weight of trying to write the way I thought I should — and falling short of that ideal, even when I was writing things I’m proud of.
Over the years, I’ve had to learn how to make a living as a writer and still love the act of writing itself. And I’ve practiced writing in the midst of chaos and fear, letting the writing be what pulls me through.
That’s what I want to teach you.
The Slow Burn is about process over perfection — learning to write in a way that keeps you engaged and moving forward, even when it feels like everything is on fire.
You’ll explore pacing, momentum, and tricking your brain into finding joy in writing — even in the messiest seasons of life.
Created by me, Ana Marie Cox — a writer with nearly 30 years of publishing experience — The Slow Burn is built on the idea that writing is something you return to, not something you have to force.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Slow Burn meets Saturdays at 1 PM ET via Zoom for four weeks in May.
Each session blends guided discussion, reflective exercises, and low-pressure writing prompts to help you build a steady, joyful practice.
✔️ Miss a class? No problem — you’ll get video recordings and recap emails each week.
✔️ Need flexibility? You’ll have prompts and reflections you can use anytime, at your own pace.
And because writing is a lifelong relationship, not a four-week fix, you’ll also get:
✔️ Monthly follow-up gatherings through August — to help you sustain your momentum
✔️ A private Discord space — for gentle accountability and community support
✔️ An alumni discount on future workshops
This is a workshop built for busy, beautifully imperfect lives.
WHAT YOU’LL GAIN:
✔️ A writing practice that supports you, instead of burning you out
✔️ Tools to move through stuck points without self-judgment
✔️ A more compassionate, flexible approach to creativity
✔️ A supportive community of like-minded writers
✔️ Ongoing momentum beyond the live sessions
You’ll also get access to a private Discord server where you can:
Stay connected with fellow writers between sessions
Share progress, ideas, and insights
Get extra support, encouragement, and resources
And after The Slow Burn, you’ll receive an exclusive alumni discount for future workshops, continuing to build long-term sustainability in your creative practice.
WHO SHOULD JOIN?
Writers who struggle with consistency but don’t want rigid rules
Anyone caught in the boom-and-bust cycle of creativity
People who love writing but feel frustrated by unrealistic expectations
People who do write regularly but want their practice to feel better — to be a source of strength, not stress
Anyone feeling the weight of life’s chaos and still longing to create
If you write, you are a writer. This is for you.

I'm a better writer by learning how to be more aware of the world, and my emotions. The workshop can make all the difference.

Its a welcoming community that creates space to think hard about how your writing can be a tool for personal growth and healing. Your writing will improve. But more importantly, you'll think about your recovery in a different way.
A.M., Winter 2025

Great teachers help you find your own truths. They guide you, rather than lecture. They share their journey and invite you to make your own. The very best are kind. Ana Marie Cox has all these qualities, and more. If you want to be a better person, and a better writer. You must take this class.

More thoughtful, intentional, and hopefully effective in my writing. And turning writing into a tool to work through some difficult issues.
